hi-res-6451114_display_image (1)In the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the flyweight division is the newest male weight class to be brought into the promotion. At the top of the division is champion Demetrius Johnson, but in the rankings after the top spot, it all depends on how you rate a fighter that rounds out the top five. For many, the second ranked fighter in the division is American wrestler, John Moraga. Moraga was the champion in several smaller fight promotions in the Phoenix area before moving onto the UFC. Moraga has fought just twice in the promotion, but is already considered a top contender. What are some of the best fights in his young career and who is the lone fighter to put a loss on his record?

Notable Wins

  • UFC on Fox: vs. Ulysses Gomez

In the first fight of his UFC career, Moraga was matched up with a talented fighter that was a big time player on the smaller California mixed martial art circuit. Gomez has incredible submission skills, but so does Moraga. With his NCAA Division I wrestling background, Moraga just needed to find a balance in this fight and he did so. In the first round, he got the KO win.

  • UFC 155: vs. Chris Cariaso

In his second UFC fight, Moraga fought a guy in Cariaso that has a lot of experience in the cage fighting some of the best fighters in the world including Renan Barao, Michael McDonald, and Takeya Mizugaki. In the third round of their fight, Moraga earned Submission of the Night honors after catching Cariaso in a Front Choke.

Notable Defeat

  • Nemesis Fighting: vs. John Dodson

Before Dodson appeared on “The Ultimate Fighter,” he took on the upstart Moraga at a Nemesis Fighting event in the Dominican Republic. The fight went 15 minutes with Dodson earning the unanimous decision victory.
