When you look back on the history of the lightweight division in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, Frankie “The Answer” Edgar is one of those fighters that stand out as one of the greatest of all time. He is a fighter that has taken part in many of the greatest and closest UFC lightweight title fights ever. He is currently competing in the featherweight division and is hoping for the same success. What are some of his most memorable fights?
- UFC 112: vs. B.J. Penn for UFC Lightweight Championship
After winning three in a row, Edgar earned a title shot at the Prodigy. It was a fight that most thought Penn would win decisively, Edgar had his own plans. He controlled the fight which stayed mostly on the feet and earned the UFC title via unanimous decision.
- UFC 125: vs. Gray Maynard for UFC Lightweight Championship
In his second title defense, Edgar took on the only man that had beaten him in his career. Maynard came out in the first round with a flurry and rocked the champion. Somehow, Edgar was able to recover and stayed alive in the fight. It became the third UFC title fight in history to end in a draw.
- UFC 144: vs. Benson Henderson for UFC Lightweight Championship
After beating Maynard to complete their trilogy, Edgar moved on to a new opponent in the former World Extreme Cagefighting champion. This is another fight that went the distance, but this time, it was Henderson that got the decision.
- UFC 156: vs. Jose Aldo for UFC Featherweight Championship
Edgar would drop another fight to Henderson and then drop down to fight Aldo for the featherweight strap. Much like five of his previous six title fights, this fight went 25 minutes. Edgar kept the fight close, but it was Aldo that claimed the unanimous decision win to keep his title.
