Notable Wins

  • UFC 156: vs. Jon Fitch

In his third fight in the welterweight division, Maia improved to 3-0 after earning the unanimous decision win against Fitch. With the loss, Fitch was released from the UFC and Maia moved up to the No. 4 spot in the divisional rankings.

  • UFC 95: vs. Chael Sonnen

In this fight with the brash and outspoken Sonnen, Maia picked up the win via submission. In the first round of their fight, Maia took Sonnen down and locked on the Triangle Choke, forcing Sonnen to tap out. This propelled Maia to a title shot at the UFC middleweight title.

Notable Losses

  • UFC 112: vs. Anderson Silva for UFC Middleweight Title

After his big win against Sonnen, Maia was considered the No. 1 contender for Silva’s world title. These two men headlined the UFC’s inaugural event in Abu Dhabi in what is considered by many to be the worst championship fight in the history of the sport.

  • UFC on Fox: vs. Chris Weidman

In what was the final fight of his middleweight career, Maia fought the upstart Weidman. Weidman controlled the fight for 15 minutes and walked away as the unanimous decision victor. It wasn’t a good showing for Maia, but showed him that the 185 pound division wasn’t the right place for him to be fighting and prompted him to drop to the 170 pound division.
